Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis has been defined in many different ways. My favorite definition is that hypnosis is the skillful use of the imagination to make changes to our behavior. It’s also been defined as a state in which the mind becomes more receptive to new patterns, positive suggestions, and fresh insights. It could be considered a natural state that we all experience mild versions of daily, such as when we’re just waking up, falling asleep, or daydreaming.
In your hypnotherapy session, I will guide you through an imaginative process to access this natural state to address the change that you’re seeking to make, whether that change is quitting smoking, finding freedom from pain, managing your weight, or sleeping better.
You remain fully aware and in control of yourself during hypnosis. It is a safe and effective tool to facilitate positive changes and personal growth. Imagine harnessing this natural state to unlock your full potential and achieve the change you want to make in your life.

Is hypnosis safe?
In short, yes. Throughout your hypnotherapy session, you will maintain awareness and control. Hypnosis invites both relaxation and an alert focus simultaneously. You can't be compelled to act against your will.
As a hypnotherapist, I am only a catalyst for you to unlock your own capacities to make the necessary changes to achieve the life that you desire.

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?
In your first session, we’ll begin by talking about your intentions and desired changes. I’ll explain hypnosis to you in more detail and give you the opportunity to ask any questions. When you feel ready, I’ll guide you into a state of hypnosis and towards making the changes that we have agreed to work on in that session. With my guidance from moment-to-moment, you’ll actively use your imagination to go into hypnosis and achieve the deep changes you desire. The first session typically lasts 60 to 90 minutes, and any subsequent sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my hypnotherapy session?
Above all, come with clarity about what you want to change and a genuine strong desire to make this change.
If your session is on Zoom, please set yourself up for the session by being on a computer rather than your phone if possible so that we’ll have a more stable and consistent visual connection. Please be seated in a chair that is comfortable to you, and it’s ideal for the chair to have armrests on which you can rest your arms. If you don’t use Zoom regularly, please verify that the sound and video are working prior to your session.

Will you be able to control me when I’m hypnotized? Will I lose my free will?
Absolutely not. In a state of hypnosis, you actually become even more aware of and focused on yourself. You become more in touch with your inner resources and your identity. Unlike the exaggerated acts in movies and stage shows, real hypnosis empowers you. Everything you experience is aligned with your intentions and comfort, without compromising your personal values.
It is virtually impossible to hypnotize someone against their will. Hypnosis is a collaborative process between the hypnotist and the client. If you don’t want to be hypnotized and you don’t collaborate with the imaginative process, you won’t go into hypnosis. (Obviously, coming to a hypnosis session without the intention to collaborate in the process would be a waste of your time and money.)

Can anyone be hypnotized?
Anyone with a normally functioning adult brain who can imagine well enough to picture their front door can benefit from hypnosis. Certainly, some people can access deeper states of hypnosis than others and some experience results through hypnosis more efficiently, but almost everyone can benefit from hypnotherapy.
